Vitamin D Deficiency Associated with Cardiovascular Disease Prevalence
Inadequate vitamin D levels are known to be associated with certain cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. In a recent study published in Atherosclerosis, researchers examined data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a population-based sample of more than 16,000 U.S. adults.
In the total survey population, 1,308 subjects had some form of CVD. Using the standard definition of vitamin D deficiency (a serum level below 20 ng/mL), participants with CVD had a higher incidence of vitamin D deficiency (29.3%) than those without CVD (21.4%). After adjusting for age, gender, race/ethnicity, season of measurement, physical activity, body mass index, smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, chronic kidney disease, and vitamin D use, the researchers showed that subjects deficient in vitamin D had a 20% increased risk of CVD.
The results of this analysis indicate a significant relationship between vitamin D deficiency and CVD prevalence in a large, highly representative sample of the US adult population.

Who Needs Probiotics?

Questions on USANA’s Probiotic Plus 1 Why is USANA’s Probiotic Plus better than other probiotics on the market?
Probiotic Plus uses a proprietary blend of patented probiotic bacteria which have been proven in clinical studies to support digestive health and immune function.
Each stick pack is filled with 12 billion viable bacteria in a 50/50 mixture of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, LGG ® and Bifidobacterium BB-12 ®. These strains of bacteria survive passage through the stomach exceptionally well, and colonise the intestines effectively.
2 How often should I take Probiotic Plus, and what is the best time to do it?
The recommended dosage for healthy people is one stick every day, or every alternate day. There is no ‘best time’ to take the product, so you may do so when it is convenient.
3 What is the right way to take USANA’s Probiotic Plus?
The most convenient way is to take Probiotic Plus straight from the stick pack. Otherwise, you may mix the content of the pack with FibergyTM, NutrimealTM, water, juices, or any cold beverage, and drink immediately. Sprinkling it on food is also acceptable.
4 Can I take Probiotic Plus with a hot drink?
We do not recommend doing so, because high temperature can destroy some of the live bacteria. 5 Why do you suggest I take Probiotic Plus immediately after mixing it in a drink?
The product may lose some of its benefits if it is left to sit for an extended period after it has been mixed in a liquid.
6 Should I keep my Probiotic Plus refrigerated?
The product is stable and keeps its effectiveness for 18 months at room temperature (25° C). Refrigerating is recommended if you live in a hot climate. Moreover, refrigeration can extend the product’s shelf life beyond 18 months.
7 Does USANA’s Probiotic Plus contain prebiotics too?
Each pack of Probiotic Plus comes with a small amount of inulin, a prebiotic. You can obtain more prebiotics (inulin and oligofructose) from USANA’s Nutrimeal, making these great complementary products.
8 Should I give Probiotic Plus to my child?
Probiotic Plus is recommended as a dietary supplement for adults. If you intend to use Probiotic Plus on a child who has diarrhea or is on antibiotics, please consult with your physician. Infants younger than 13 months should not use probiotics.
9 Can diabetics take Probiotic Plus ?
Probiotic Plus does not contain carbohydrates or sugars in any amount that will affect blood-sugar level. Nevertheless, it is always advisable for those under medication to consult their doctors when starting on a dietary supplement.
10 Is Probiotic Plus suitable for vegetarians and vegans? Probiotic bacteria are naturally present in many foods such as miso, tofu and tempeh that are eaten by vegetarians. There is, however, a small amount of milk powder in Probiotic Plus – so it will not be suitable for those who strictly avoid milk in their diet.
